BIOGRAPHY
Michalis
Katzourakis was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1933. In 1938 his family
settled in Athens. Upon graduation from Athens College, in 1951,
he left for Paris, where he studied painting with Andre Lhote
and, subsequently, graphic arts and drawing with Paul Colin. He
returned to Athens in 1955 and worked for several years as a
free-lance graphic designer. He was Artistic Advisor to the Greek
Organization for Tourism (E.O.T.) from 1960 to 1967. In the years
1962 to 1974 he co-founded
and directed K & K Advertising Center of Athens with
F.Carabott. In 1974 he established the firm AMK Architects &
Designers, specializing in
international interior design with an emphasis on cruise ship
interiors. He showed his paintings for the first time in 1955, at
the Paine Gallery, and then, in 1967, at the Athens Art Gallery.
In 1969 he exhibited minimalist two- and three-dimensional works
at the Goethe Institute of Athens, and, in 1970, industrially
produced works in polystyrene based on drawings. The direction
during this period was the creation of works whose primary
concern was the nature of the space for which they were intended.
In 1976 he became a member of the art group, Processes and
Systems. 1977 marked the beginning of his explorations into the
possibilities of mixed media, and ‘hand-crafted’, more
gestural works created with no specific destination in mind.
His
works are found in the National Gallery of Athens and in public
and private collections both in Greece and abroad.
