About the Artwork

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch painter and a pioneer of abstract art. He was a key figure in the De Stijl movement, known for his work in which he reduced art to its fundamental elements: horizontal and vertical lines and primary colors. His goal was to achieve a sense of universal harmony. Composition (No. 1) Gray-Red is a beautiful example of his early abstract work. It shows his move from naturalistic representation to a more structured, geometric style. The painting is a testament to his search for universal harmony through the use of color and form.
