"Fishing" (ca. 1862–63) by the French painter Édouard Manet (1832-1883) is an early work that shows his move toward a modern, unidealized style. Manet was a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. This painting, with its free brushwork and contemporary subject matter, marks his departure from academic conventions and his interest in capturing everyday life.
