"Idle Governor" (1940) by the American painter Horatio C. Forjohn (1894-1985) is an unusual and striking work of American Modernism. Forjohn was known for his portraits and his stylized, often abstract compositions. This painting, with its bold lines and surreal subject matter, reflects the artist's interest in the psychological and social aspects of his time, with a powerful sense of symbolic meaning.
