ART BECOMES SPACE

COS™ applied to European neighbourhoods. From original artwork to the architecture of public life.

EURAN brings its Cultural Operating System™ into spatial design through one defined proposition: the structural language of art becomes a design grammar for accessible, beautiful, resilient public environments. One authored method. Three locally distinct living demonstrations.

Methodological diagram. Architectural dimensions, site selections and demonstrators will be established through research and technical design.

01 · The authored innovation

The artwork is the generator of the public-space design.

EURAN applies ADSM™ — Art-Driven Spatial Method, within COS™, to extract design intelligence from selected original artworks. Spatial rhythms, relationships, chromatic hierarchies, density, movement and voids are translated into architectural rules. These rules are then reconciled with local history, neighbourhood functions, public participation, accessibility and environmental requirements.

1. SelectOriginal artwork and local cultural sources, with documented rights.
2. ExtractMap geometry, rhythm, light, composition and symbolic relationships.
3. TranslateDevelop spatial rules, layouts, materials and public-space components.
4. Co-authorResidents and specialists test and refine options for real use.
5. DemonstrateBuild suitable pilots and independently evaluate their outcomes.
The research question: Can an art-generated and community-adapted spatial design method deliver measurable improvements in inclusion, belonging, multisensory experience and environmental quality, compared with conventional public-space design pathways?

EURAN's six town-planning principles — Signification, Dynamism, Expression, Energy, Fusion, Sensualism & Brilliancy — provide the architectural doctrine. COS™ provides the instruments. The local artworks and communities give each demonstration its own identity.

02 · What we actually design and produce

A family of Art-Generated Civic Spaces.

One transferable methodology produces site-specific architectural outcomes. The demonstrators are physical and spatial, supported by digital modelling and cultural participation.

PROTOTYPE A · PUBLIC LIFE

The Art-Generated Civic Room

A defined public gathering place. Art-derived spatial composition determines the organisation of seating, meeting points, shade, planting, thresholds, surfaces and artistic elements. Local users determine functional priorities and accessibility.

PROTOTYPE B · MOVEMENT

The Art-Generated Passage

An identifiable pedestrian sequence connecting shared destinations. Artwork rhythm becomes a system of turns, pauses, orientation markers, visual connections, lighting cues and accessible movement.

PROTOTYPE C · SOCIAL ECOLOGY

The Art-Generated Commons

A neighbourhood-scale micro-network combining cultural activity, modular public elements, biodiversity, climate-responsive comfort and community stewardship. Multiple small spaces act together as one civic composition.

These are EURAN's proposed research prototype types. Their exact form, size, materials, permits and implementation will be determined for each selected neighbourhood.

Illustrative design transformation

An artwork with a strong diagonal rhythm generates an accessible circulation sequence. Its density map suggests where spaces open into a civic room. Its chromatic structure informs orientation, restrained color and material choices. Its zones of light and contrast inform shelter, planting and gathering areas.

The tangible deliverables

Annotated art-to-space transformation maps; 2D plans and 3D spatial models; accessible and climate-aware component specifications; co-created neighbourhood variants; approved physical or temporary demonstrators; and a transferable method manual.

03 · Select the instruments for the task

The COS™ toolbox becomes a working architectural system.

InstrumentFunction in ADPDefined project output
MSF™ — Master Strategic FrameworkDefines the cultural and operational doctrine.ADP architecture, design criteria, governance and authorship framework.
ADSM™ — Art-Driven Spatial MethodTranslates artwork morphology into spatial configuration.Art-derived plan grammars, paths, civic rooms and landscape relationships.
ADDM™ — Art to DesignTranslates artistic logic into objects, components and design discipline.Materials, wayfinding, furniture and public-space component language.
Prototypes™ / Signatures™Defines repeatable spatial structure and locally authored identity.Three site-adapted demonstrator families and corresponding spatial signatures.
SPVI™ — Space Perceived Value IndexStudies perceived quality and patterns of spatial experience.Pre/post perception measures with an independently defined protocol.
CSI™ — Cultural Stability IntelligenceAssesses coherence, tensions and resilience of the cultural-spatial system.Site diagnosis and longitudinal cultural-coherence assessment.
CCPI™ — Cultural & Creative Performance IndexSupports long-term cultural-performance and value assessment.Selected indicators for uptake, stewardship and prospective replication.

COS™ is an authored EURAN system. Research partners will define and independently assess the scientific validity, measurement properties and suitability of individual indicators for Horizon Europe.

04 · European demonstration architecture

Three neighbourhood types. Three identities. One comparable methodology.

URBAN · DEMONSTRATOR 01

Art and the Civic Room

A compact district requiring a new place for social encounter and legible cultural identity. Candidate framework: an Italian urban setting, with the territorial partner and precise site to be selected.

PERI-URBAN · DEMONSTRATOR 02

Art and the Connected Waterfront

A peri-urban public-space network connecting neighbourhood life, access, climate comfort and waterfront identity. Candidate framework: Greece, with local authority and access to be agreed.

RURAL · DEMONSTRATOR 03

Art and the Village Commons

Public shared space linking local heritage, nature, social participation and intergenerational uses. Candidate framework: Portugal or another eligible Member State, subject to site selection.

The same research protocol is tested in all three contexts. The artistic source, architectural response and community priorities remain specific to each place. Candidate countries are proposed starting points for consortium development.

Evaluation: participatory design quality, accessibility, patterns of use, perceived security, social cohesion, aesthetic and multisensory experience, thermal and water resilience, biodiversity, and environmental outcomes. Indicators and comparisons will be developed by qualified researchers.
